What's The Matter?

This WebQuest is designed to introduce students to the concept of matter. Matter is all around you.

You are made of matter. The computer that you are using for this activity is made of matter. The food you eat, the liquid you drink and the air you breathe are all made of matter.

Task:  In this activity, you will work independently on a packet, which you will find by clicking here. This document will open in a new window.  First you must click on "File", then "Save", and save the document to your server folder before proceeding.  PLEASE READ ALL THE DIRECTIONS BEFORE BEGINNING WORK ON THE PACKET. Make sure your name, period, and teacher’s name are on each page of the packet. This packet will be completed entirely on the computer. When you are done with this packet, you will print it out and hand it in to your teacher.

Process:
1.  Matter and the States of Matter

2.  Solids

3.  Liquids

4.  Gases

5.  Solutions and Mixtures

6.  Atoms

Step 1 – Matter and the States of Matter
What is matter?  What are the states of matter?  How does matter change from one state to another?  Visit these websites to answer the questions on page 2 of your packet.  Each link will open in a new window.  When you are finished with each site, close the window and return to this page:

Step 2 - Solids
What makes a solid a solid?  What are the characteristics of a solid?  Visit these websites to answer the questions on page 3 of your packet:

Step 5 – Solutions and Mixtures
What are solutions and mixtures?  What makes them different?  Visit these web sites to answer the questions on page 4 of your packet:

Step 6 - Atoms
All elements are made of atoms. While the atoms may have different weights and organization, they are all built in the same way. Electrons, protons, and neutrons make the universe go. Please click on all of the following links to answer the questions on page 5 and 6 of your packet:

Conclusion:  After making sure your name is on your packet, please turn it in to your teacher.  You are now an
 expert on Matter & Atoms!
