Mrs. DeMino

Picture

My name is Kristina DeMino and I am the mother of a beautiful little girl, Isabela Christine, who was born on the 4th of July in 2010.  One of my favorite quotes is by George Santayana, which states, "We must welcome the future, remembering that soon it will be the past; and we must respect the past, remembering that it was once all that was humanly possible."  I believe that this statement transcends all disciplines and subjects to include the importance of establishing humanity in all that we do and the ability of protecting the environment as well.

I attended The University of Maryland in College Park and earned a degree in Criminal Justice/Microbiology in 2003.  After working in the Law Enforcement field for several years I decided that my true passion was teaching others.  In 2010 I returned to the University of North Carolina - Wilmington (UNCW) to pursue my Master's of Education in Middle Grades Science.  I have always loved science, especially when it includes the ability to be hands on.  My goal is to encourage the youth of today and instill in them the love of learning.  Even though I focus on the subject of science I believe that all disciplines are interlinked.  Literacy is extremely important and the basic groundwork to expand knowledge in any other discipline.

I have a special dedication to students who have been identified as gifted and talented and also those diagnosed with certain learning/emotional disabilities, focusing specifically on Autism/ Asperger’s Syndrome and ADD/ADHD.

My family and I recently moved back to the beach and I this will be my second year teaching at DC Virgo Preparatory School in Wilmington, North Carolina.

I previously taught 7th grade science at NEAL MAGNET MIDDLE SCHOOL, STEM Academy of Engineering and Design, in Durham, North Carolina.  I gradated December 15, 2012 with my Master's of Art in Teaching for Middle Grade Science and Academic/Intellectually Gifted license.

I’m a sci-fi fanatic when it comes to reading, television shows and movies.  Currently my favorite shows are Doctor Who and Primeval and my favorite authors are Laurel Hamilton and Michael Scott.  For anyone who enjoyed the Harry Potter movies, I recommend reading The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series.  Movie wise I enjoy animated movies, mainly because my daughter is 4, and Wreck It Ralph was funny in so many ways.

Grammar speaks; dialectics teach us truth; rhetoric gives colouring to our speech; music sings; arithmetic numbers; geometry weighs and measures; astronomy teaches us to know the stars.
